Lasers and optical technologies play a significant role in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery.

Just For Men

If you're a man considering facial plastic surgery...

With society’s growing emphasis on health and keeping fit, it is only natural for both men and women to want their facial appearance to reflect their physical vitality, energy and wellbeing.

Facial plastic surgery for men has become much more commonplace in today’s world and men are choosing to have cosmetic surgery in increasing numbers.

Often, men are looking for a career advantage as a side benefit to facial cosmetic enhancements. This decade finds men and women staying longer in the workforce, while every year a new group of graduates seek to begin their careers.

A younger look can express an ability to compete against younger co-workers and help to provide a boost in self-confidence and esteem.

A rejuvenated look can indicate a “can do” attitude, while a tired or worried expression can give the wrong impression to business associates and prospective employers.

An increasing number of men are interested in correcting facial imperfections or injuries from their childhood with scar revision or reconstructive procedures. Many middle-aged men are looking for a more sculpted, youthful profile. They prefer to eliminate the signs of aging such as the frown lines on the forehead or the tired look of bags under the eyes.

For men who do not want to commit to a long-lasting cosmetic enhancement, there are new alternatives to surgery for frown lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers, such as BOTOX®, RESTYLANE®, and RADIESSE® are commonly used to restore skin to a more youthful appearance, smooth out frown lines, eliminate forehead creases and reverse the presence of scars. These nonsurgical treatments can be done during a regular office visit and without interrupting a busy work schedule.

Another concern for men is getting rid of a “turkey waddle” or the loose skin that hangs under the chin. This can be achieved with liposuction of the neck or in some cases a neck lift may provide the most dramatic improvement. The most common procedures requested by men include liposuction, eyelid surgery, nose surgery, facial implants, brow lifts and facelifts.

The male face presents special considerations when one is considering a cosmetic procedure. Significant factors include the richer blood supply and thicker skin of a man’s face, which can influence both healing and scarring. In addition, the pattern of hair growth for the beard, sideburns and forehead must also be carefully evaluated.

In men with thinning hair or a receding hairline, it becomes even more important for the surgeon to choose the right technique to hide and camouflage scars for the best results. The true expertise and knowledge of the surgeon are revealed by the many distinct challenges presented in male cosmetic surgery.

During a consultation appointment, Dr. Hayes will explain the unique features that define the more rugged, chiseled look of the male face. And because the dominant features of a man’s face are very different from the softer, rounder profile that women prefer, the facial plastic surgeon you choose should be experienced in both.

As men and women become better educated about cosmetic surgery through the news media and television, they feel more comfortable with seeking medical advice on how to improve their appearance. Although women have led the way in seeking facial enhancements, there is no longer a stigma attached to men who are considering cosmetic treatments and cosmetic surgery.

Men tackle their appearance.

Men are undergoing facial rejuvenation to look and feel younger. Many want a quick turn around so that they can swiftly return to work. It was once unthinkable for men to admit to having a little work done, but not anymore. Fortunately, there are many facial cosmetic procedure options ranging from simple, non-surgical treatments such as chemical peels and Botox to surgical procedures, such as hair restoration, that can help reduce the signs of aging and improve a man’s appearance and self-image.

It’s no surprise that men are eager to look younger and more fit. According to the AAFPRS, men have an ever-increasing interest in cosmetic surgery and it is promising to see that, like women, men are taking advantage of the many benefits that these procedures have to offer. The top non-invasive procedures include BOTOX® and other filler injections; top surgical procedures include hair restoration and ablative skin resurfacing.

Botox.

Botox injections have become a popular way to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet and furrowed brows. It is administered via tiny injections into the overactive muscles that cause lines to form. Botox can soften wrinkles around the eyes and between the brows and may last up to four months. An increase of 162 percent since 2001 shows that patients appreciate the quick, easy treatment with low risk and immediate, youthful results.

Filler and fat injections.

Men chose to add youthful fullness and reduce the signs of wrinkles by receiving non-invasive filler injections by an increase of 47 percent. Injections reported commonly used include fat, calcium hydroxyapatite, hyaluronic acid, and poly-L-Lactic acid. Although the injections provide immediate results, it is not a permanent solution. “You cannot beat the convenience of running over on your lunch hour and coming back a new, younger looking man,” says Steve K., a salesperson who believes his appearance is directly tied to his success in his career.

Hair restoration.

Over the last year, there has been an increase in hair transplant surgery by 17 percent. Follicular unit transplantation entails your surgeon taking a strip of hair-bearing scalp, dividing it into several hundred smaller grafts (follicular units), and then inserting these units, preserving blood vessels and tissue, into small needle-sized sites in the recipient area. The procedure may take several sessions over several months to achieve desired results.

Ablative skin resurfacing.

Ablative skin resurfacing includes procedures such as deep chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and dermabrasion. These procedures remove top layers of damaged or wrinkling skin in order to heal and reveal a younger, smoother skin.
